Is your child growing right?

You have done your best to provide your child with optimal nutrition and also to make sure he or she is physically active as well. But how do you know if your child is eating right and growing well?

The simplest and most effective way to find out is to monitor your child's growth regularly (e.g. every 6 months), by using the body mass index (BMI) for age as an indicator. You want to make sure he is at the right weight for his height and age. Never determine if your child is growing right by comparing him or her with other children. Children grow at different rates, and into different sizes and heights.

How to calculate BMI manually?

You can also calculate manually your child's BMI and check his or her growth status.
Keep this chart to allow you to monitor his growth periodically.

  • Measure your child’s height and weight.
  • Use these measurements to calculate your child’s (BMI) with this formula:
  • Compare your child’s BMI to the standard growth chart from the World Health Organization. The growth charts are gender specific, so remember to use the appropriate chart for boys or girls.

What's next?

  • Using a pencil, find your child’s age on the horizontal axis of the chart and move vertically up.
  • Find your child’s BMI on the vertical axis and move horizontally across to the right of the chart.
  • At the point where these two lines meet, draw a small cross or dot. The region where the small cross or dot falls on indicates your child’s growth status.
